Surgical Procedures for Pets
Our surgical services are used to address a range of wellness, diseases, and conditions for cats and dogs at our Wiggins clinic. We pride ourselves on following strict protocols as part of our dedication to providing the very best care for your pet.
A dedicated team member is on hand during each procedure to administer anesthesia and continuously monitor your pet using electronic patient monitoring equipment. Pain management will also be provided.
We prioritize post-operative monitoring and pain management once your pet is out of surgery. Your vet will also provide thorough instructions for at-home care.
What to Expect from Veterinary Surgery
We always keep you fully informed about the purpose behind our recommendation for a surgical procedure and any post-operative care for your pet may need at home.
Surgical Procedures
At Wiggins, we perform medical and emergency surgeries to help treat disease and conditions or repair injuries.
We commonly perform the following procedures:
- Soft Tissue Surgery
We offer soft tissue procedures for pets experiencing ear, nose, and throat disorders.
These procedures are also used for hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders.
- Spaying & Neutering
Spaying or neutering refers to surgically sterilizing dogs and cats to prevent disease, unwanted litters, and provide them with an extended life expectancy.
- C-Sections
During Cesarean sections, we will surgically remove puppies or kittens from their mother's uterus.
C-sections are used in situations where the mother would be unable to give birth naturally.
- Mass Removal
Cats and dogs can develop masses on their skin. Some types of masses can also grow inside a body cavity and can be serious or life-threatening.
Mass removal surgery is a fairly common procedure for both cats and dogs.
- Foreign Body
A foreign body is an object that has entered your pet's body in some way.
Whether your cat or dog has eaten something they shouldn't have, or an accident injured them and introduced a foreign object into their body, we can perform foreign body surgery to remove it.
Some situations may be more complicated, requiring complex procedures. If that is the case for your animal, your vet will refer you to a cat or dog surgeon near Wiggins and work closely with your veterinary surgeon to ensure that your dog or cat receives the very best care.
- Wounds
A wound occurs when living tissue has been cut, broken, burned, torn, or otherwise damaged.
If your pet sustains a wound, it must be cleaned, disinfected, and appropriately cared for by a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible.
- Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgeries treat injuries and diseases of the bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and other skeletal structures in your pet. If your dog or cat has a condition or injury that requires advanced specialized care, your vet will refer your pet to a specialist vet surgeon near Wiggins.
- Dental Surgery
Our veterinarians perform dental surgeries for dogs and cats, including tooth extractions, gum disease treatment, and jaw fracture repairs.
The Veterinary Surgery Process
We know that it can be a little frightening when your pet needs surgery; they are family after all. We will only recommend surgery when it is in the best interests of your furry companion.
Our team will thoroughly explain the procedure to you, explaining why we are recommending surgery and ensuring that you are comfortable with deciding to move ahead.
If your pet is in need of specialized care, your vet will refer you to a veterinary surgeon near Wiggins and work closely with them to ensure that your pet receives the best possible care.
Surgical protocols at our clinic
Pre-surgical assessments. We will review the specifics of the procedure in great detail, perform a physical examination of the patient, and make sure blood tests have been completed and reviewed by the vet in order to determine whether your pet can safely be put under anesthesia.
Dedicated surgical suites. We perform all procedures in a dedicated surgical suite in our clinic. This room is kept completely sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Surgical attire. Disposable caps and masks will be worn at all times by staff members in the surgical suite. Those involved in the procedure itself are also outfitted with sterile gowns and single-use gloves.
Sterile packs and equipment. We always take the time to carefully clean, sterilize, and wrap our surgical instruments and equipment before every surgical procedure.
